Reporting from Oakland, Calif.
Barbara Lee won the Oakland mayoral election, four months after concluding her multi-term congressional career. Lee, who served in Congress from 1998 to 2024, is notably known for casting the sole vote against military force authorization following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Oakland, a city of approximately 436,000 residents located across the bay from San Francisco, held this special election following the recall of Mayor Sheng Thao in 2024. The election centered on addressing municipal priorities including economic recovery following the pandemic, public safety, and city administration.
Loren Taylor, 47, a former City Council member, conceded on Saturday after the completion of the vote count. Taylor’s campaign focused on specific proposals for municipal improvements, including detailed plans addressing public safety and administrative reforms. Lee, 78, emphasized her legislative experience and outlined her proposals for municipal governance during the campaign.
