Iranian Deputy Dismissed Following Antarctica Trip

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has removed Vice President of Parliamentary Affairs Shahram Dabiri from his position following Dabiri’s recent trip to Antarctica.
In a decree issued Saturday, President Pezeshkian stated the trip was inconsistent with government policy regarding official conduct. The president cited current economic conditions facing Iranian citizens as a factor in his decision.
“Government officials’ travel expenses, even when personally funded, must align with our administration’s stated principles,” Pezeshkian wrote, referencing administrative guidelines that emphasize fiscal responsibility.
The president noted that Dabiri’s previous government service record was considered in the decision, while emphasizing the administration’s commitment to its stated policy objectives, according to the state news agency IRNA.
When contacted about the dismissal, Dabiri stated he disagreed with the characterization of his actions but would accept the president’s decision.
Pezeshkian’s decree emphasized that government officials are expected to demonstrate fiscal restraint, particularly during periods of economic challenge.
Iran’s economy currently faces various pressures, including international sanctions related to its nuclear program.
The Iranian currency reached 1,039,000 rial to the US dollar last week, according to Reuters, citing data from Bonbast.com, representing its lowest recorded value.
Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani told IRNA that the president’s decision demonstrates his commitment to maintaining consistent standards for all officials, with focus on administrative effectiveness and public interest.
